In today’s dynamic hospitality landscape, one of the most pressing challenges faced by organizations is the shortage of qualified talent. Industries across the board are grappling with a scarcity of skilled professionals, making the hiring process more competitive than ever. By understanding the challenges faced by businesses in attracting qualified talent and implementing creative recruitment strategies, organizations can not only survive but thrive in a competitive market. In this post, we delve into the intricacies of navigating the shortage and explore effective strategies for hiring in a fiercely competitive market. In the face of the talent shortage, adaptability and strategic thinking will be the driving forces behind successful recruitment efforts.

The Talent Shortage Dilemma

The talent shortage is a multifaceted problem arising from factors such as rapid technological advancements, evolving skill requirements, and demographic shifts. Businesses, particularly in industries with specialized skill sets, find themselves in a constant battle to attract and retain qualified individuals. This shortage poses a threat not only to immediate recruitment needs but also to long-term growth and sustainability. Here are the top three challenges in attracting qualified talent:

1. Skill Mismatch: As industries evolve, the demand for specific skills rises. However, the education system and workforce often struggle to keep pace, leading to a significant skill mismatch.

2. Changing Workforce Dynamics: The preferences and expectations of the workforce are changing. Millennials and Generation Z, for example, prioritize factors like work-life balance, career development, and a sense of purpose in their professional lives.

3. Increased Competition: With businesses expanding globally and embracing remote work, the pool of talent has become more accessible. Simultaneously, it has intensified competition as organizations vie for the same skilled individuals.

6 Effective Recruitment Strategies

1. Embrace Remote Work: In a world where remote work has become the norm, offering flexible work arrangements can significantly broaden the talent pool. Highlighting a commitment to work-life balance can make your organization more attractive to potential candidates.

2. Invest in Training and Development: Instead of solely relying on external talent, consider investing in training and upskilling programs for existing employees. This not only addresses the skill shortage but also fosters loyalty among the workforce.

3. Utilize Social Media and Employer Branding: Leverage the power of social media platforms to showcase your company culture, values, and success stories. A strong employer brand can set your organization apart, making it more appealing to prospective employees.

4. Streamline the Application Process: Simplify and expedite the application and interview process. Lengthy and complicated procedures can deter qualified candidates from pursuing opportunities with your organization.

5. Offer Competitive Compensation and Benefits: While it may seem obvious, ensuring that your compensation packages are competitive is crucial. Additionally, consider non-traditional benefits such as flexible schedules, wellness programs, and professional development opportunities.

6. Cultivate a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace: A diverse and inclusive workplace not only attracts a broader range of talent but also contributes to a more innovative and dynamic work environment. Highlight your commitment to diversity and inclusion in your recruitment efforts.

What does your pre-employment onboarding process look like these days? You desire your new employees to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors in order to become effective organizational members and insiders. But how effective are your current practices?

As the competition continues to heat up for employers, pre-employment onboarding is more important than ever. Niki Jorgensen, a Forbes Councils Member, says “The time period between an accepted employment offer and the first day on the job is not only critical to extending the company culture, but also in helping to ensure new hires remain with the company for the formal onboarding process and beyond.”

Building and maintaining your successful company begins with effective recruitment practices. Avoid being ghosted by a top candidate and consider revamping these four areas of your pre-onboarding process: support of key personnel, the welcome, communication, and expectations.

Start by looking into your support of key personnel. This is where the onboarding process actually begins. Who are the people that play an integral role in remaining connected to new hires before the formal program begins? For you, this might be a hiring manager, recruiter, or even direct supervisor. Consider providing your key personnel with communication templates that can be personalized. This will result in consistent messaging that supports the culture and strengthens your brand.

Second, make a fantastic first impression and offer a friendly welcome. You can establish an inviting environment for your new employees which sets the tone for positive company culture. Consider creating a personalized welcome video that will make new hires feel appreciated and part of the team. If possible, feature future co-workers in onboarding videos. This will help new hires put faces with names before day one.

Next, identify and implement a process for ongoing communication to remain in contact with new hires. If you can continue communication with a candidate after a job is accepted, this will help to alleviate any doubts and enable them to feel a more immediate connection to the company. Try a brief weekly phone call or e-mail. You can share new information as well as ask additional questions.

Finally, set and communicate expectations. Let your new hire know exactly what to expect the first week. Consider sharing a clear, written agenda, including introductions to key personnel and team members, required training sessions, completion of online forms, etc. This may all seem routine for you. However, you can use your knowledge to set your new hire up for success. Providing an organized schedule of events in advance not only helps new employees, but also results in more engaged new hires. And that will lead to less employee turnover.

Rain or shine, Seattle knows how to have a good time… do you??

Known for far more than umbrellas, Seattle is an urban city surrounded by natural beauty and a surplus of lifestyle that will entertain.

While, it is a must for tourist and residents alike to at some point experience the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the Seattle Great Wheel, Seattle has so many more sights to offer within the city proper and beyond. Take a trip to Woodinville for Washington wines where you won’t be disappointed by what comes off these vines. Or load up on the Victoria Clipper for an awe-inspiring trip to Canada because you are oh-so-close… just don’t forget your passport.

Seattle is a sightseer’s paradise and a food-lovers dream.

Throughout Seattle you can endlessly explore and gain an inside edge on the best culinary stops-whether that means beating the line for a specialty at Pike’s Place Market or sampling a neighborhood’s best banh mi sandwiches.

From beers to burgers and local fish selections to that can’t-deny-it, good dessert, there’s never too few places to try for your next night out.

Beyond the amusement of the city itself, the economy of Seattle is booming just along with its’ people’s love for the city. As the population grows, families move in and outsiders begin to call this place home… Seattle has a lot to offer.

There’s one thing we can guarantee about Seattle, there’s no such thing as a rainy day in to get you down.

San Francisco’s restaurant scene is always hot, and 2017 is no exception. It can be a lot for even locals to keep track of. From hearty comfort food to Michelin-starred fine dining, there are restaurants for every palate. You just have to find your favorites!

And just because the sun doesn’t always shine on the Golden Gate Bridge, there’s plenty to keep entertained with an umbrella in hand. Whether it’s City Hall, The Railway Museum or shopping at the Ferry Building, you won’t be left to wait for the sun to have a little fun.

We’re expanding… East!

Beyond the sunny coast of California, the warm shores of Hawaii, the Emerald City of Seattle and everywhere in-between, Pacific Coast Hospitality is honored to be selected and retained by the prestigious Sun Valley Resort to locate the ideal candidate to fill their Food and Beverage Director position. Often the setting of seasonal homes for the rich and famous, Sun Valley Resort is the largest, privately owned ski resort in America, catering to the most discerning of guests.

The seasons in Sun Valley may change, but one thing never does: The mountains come with a to-do list as tall as they are. Winter slopes and summer escapes, adrenaline junkies and those on a mission to find some peace, it’s all simple pleasures and luxurious indulgences. Home of the first ski resort to build a chairlift, countless Winter Olympics medalists, and the largest automated snowmaking system in the world, the buzz of innovation and excellence is ever present. Maybe it’s the 300 days a year of sunshine giving it the name “Sun Valley”, or the small town feel of Haley and Ketchum, an outdoor area of surplus options….no matter what brings guest to the mountains, alpine living and vacationing works up an appetite.

There’s no denying, the restaurant industry in Sun Valley is not missing a beat and we are proud to now be representing world class clients in this famous mountain resort mecca. With stores and restaurants all within walking distance, owned and operated by mostly locals, Sun Valley is filled with flavorful and unique dishes. The dining scene serves up a diverse mix of saloon style rib-eyes with pride-of-Idaho potatoes, delicious Italian, Asian-fusion, contemporary comfort food or the mountain town staple beer and burger combo.

We’re proud to be trusted by companies both big and small and believe that our experience and unique recruiting process will deliver a matchless dependability for many in Sun Valley. We’re not the usual hospitality recruitment firm. We find people not typically found through traditional channels. As we know the market, make connections and serve our clients again and again, it’s time we expanded east, welcome to Sun Valley!

True hospitality in a lot of cases is simply a lost art. Not so long ago you would have been greeted at the door of anyplace, the gas station attendant would wash your windshield and the host would happily take your coat upon arrival for dinner.

For every owner, front of house host and server, we know what you see when dining out the good, bad and ugly of hospitality. So if it’s been seen, what’s the hold up to putting it in play on the job?

Perhaps the answer lies in the basics of hiring and what we do with new staff once we’ve hired them. Restaurants are very much transient employers. People come and go and, unfortunately, service is negatively affected by turnover. Unless you have figured out that regular and consistent training is the absolute foundation of your restaurant and your first priority, your guest experience will be inconsistent at best.

The key in hiring is to look for approach, attitude and true desire to serve over prior experience. If these core values are present and you take the time to develop and train your fledgling staff, your customers will notice and reward your restaurant with their business. Once you believe in and practice effective consistent training and recognize and reward your standouts, your restaurant will have a lasting powerful advantage over your competitors. This is a simple concept, yet too often overlooked with all the other important details in running restaurants.

Don’t let hospitality be a lost art in your restaurant. Develop a new game plan that begins with your staff understanding and practicing the nuances of what service really means and what your guest seeks. Train consistently, over deliver on each guest’s expectations and take pride in sustaining the magic.

It’s no secret that employees want to love their jobs and when they love their jobs, it ultimately means less turnover for your business. Whether you’re looking to increase employee performance for your longstanding restaurant or are just starting out on a new venture and at the core deeply desire to build a highly desired work culture, you are the key to making employees

love their jobs.

We’ve rounded up five sure-fire ways to help your employees love working for you:

1. Money speaks, but so do other benefits. Love what you’re seeing from a manager? Appreciate it with a small raise in salary. Along with a higher paycheck, offer benefits of all types that help to engage employees in your company – whether it be a free meal during each shift or a company wide dinner on you, no strings attached, offer the perks. Employees go where they are given the most, and that includes what is offered beyond just a paycheck.

2. Did you know what technology you have impacts employees view of working for you? Whether it’s the latest software or computers, employees view the technology that aids their job as a huge part of their decision to stay or go. Get the latest, keep it cutting edge.

3. You want employees to see you as a leader? Cancel the useless meetings and when you do have mandatory meetings, make them worth it. It all goes back to item #1 on this list, employees want benefits and not just cash. Try catering a local competitor for your next mandatory staff meetings – see how it encourages your own staff to “step up their game” and stay above the competition. Plus, your employees will love a free treat and appreciate the time they didn’t spend in hours of meetings boasting of low productivity!

4. Go beyond what happens inside your four walls. Each employee you hire has personal goals and ideas for where they see their future going. Engage in conversations to help make their goals happen. As an employer you hold the power to develop leadership skills which can prepare each employee for their next step. Get creative about how you can offer extra responsibilities to create outstanding character and prepare them for what’s to come.

5. Tune in! It’s time you start listening to employee suggestions. Sure you’ve held that annual staff meeting where you note down suggestions, but listening to employees goes far beyond that. Need a place to start? Hang up an “Idea Board” where employees can easily write up problems and solutions to help make their jobs better – and follow through with helping to make solutions a reality.

After all it’s no surprise that employees who like their job, enjoy the company culture and respect who they work for will ultimately perform better. Get started today creating simple and smart ways for employees to speak up and be heard, feel appreciated for their hard work and enjoy their job on a multitude of levels.

Job hunting can be a long and stressful process. Finally getting the call for an interview should be exciting news, but for many people it brings on a new wave of stress and anxiety. If you want to put your best foot forward, take a deep breath and be sure to steer clear of these big interview don’ts.

Don’t show up disheveled and sloppy. We’re all taught not to judge a book by it’s cover, but the truth is that in a job interview your appearance will be the thing that interviewers notice first. Appropriate work attire varies greatly between companies, but a little research before hand should let you know if you’re headed into a casual jeans enviroment or something more upscale. Most interviewers will forgive you for being slightly over or underdressed, but rolling straight out of bed- sloppy is a different story. Be sure to plan enough time into your day to arrive with well-groomed hair, trimmed nails, and wrinkle-free clothing. Looking like a slob can communicate to the interviewer that you don’t respect the company or the opportunity enough to take the time to put your best foot forward.

Don’t be clueless about the hiring company. If you’ve taken the time to apply for the job, it should me that you’re interested in being a part of their company. Spend a few hours in the days before your interview to do a little research on the business and even the hiring manager, if possible. Chances are that you will be asked if you have any questions about the company, and being able to ask an informed question will show that you take initiative and are serious about the opportunity. Walking into an interview with no knowledge of the company can come across as insulting and will make the hiring manager question if you’re even interested in the job at all.

Don’t freeze up. Interviews are stressful for everyone, but even more so for shy personalities and people with anxiety. It can be a natural tendency to feel nervous and want to stay quiet and get the process over as quickly as possible. But this is your one chance to show the hiring manager that you can be an asset to their company, and that’s virtually impossible when you freeze up. If your nerves tend to take over in an interview, spend a little time practicing in the days leading up to it. Go over common questions and think of how you might answer them. On the day of the interview remember to breath, look the interviewer in the eye, and try to avoid one word answers.

Don’t dominate the conversation. This is the polar opposite of freezing up, but it is usually a result of the same nerves and anxiety. You’re told to spend time practicing what you might say and to research the company before hand, but how do you apply those things once in the interview? You wait for the questions to be asked! You don’t want to walk into the room and begin talking as if it is a one-sided monologue rather than an interview. Even if you’re saying all the right things, dominating the conversation can feel exhausting for the hiring manager and be a major turn off. If nerves tend to make you talk more, try to focus on remembering to let the interviewer lead the conversation and maybe even ask him or her questions pertaining to the position to help engage in conversation.

Don’t stretch the truth. Everyone wants to put their best foot forward and deliver the best resume, but in the age of mass information it’s easier than ever to fact check anything you tell an interviewer. If there is anything less than impressive in your work history, it is best to take the high road and offer a simple, yet non-defensive explanation. Your trustworthiness is of the most importance and is a quality that any interviewer will want to see.

Job hunting is hard enough, don’t make it any more difficult than it has to be. If you keep these five things in mind as you prepare for your interview, then you’ll have a great shot at landing the job that you really want!
