Live and work in one of the Pacific Northwest’s most unique and desirable locations, we have an outstanding Head Chef opportunity on San Juan Island, WA. Excellent salary, benefits, and work environment are all part of the package with this locally owned company. Located in Friday Harbor on the island, this established property has a seasoned ownership team and is looking for a good fit for their team.  Work, live, and thrive on the island, or take the ferry to work!

We are searching for a driven and talented Head Chef with experience in high-quality high-volume Northwest cuisine. The ideal candidate will be able to uphold and exceed our reputation for the finest fresh local ingredient menu, which is expertly served with an uncompromising commitment to quality and value.  You will possess a proven track record and passion for maintaining excellent food quality, mentoring and developing others.  We take great pride in the development of our team.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • THREE or more years high volume full-service restaurant chef
  • This is a BUSY restaurant – MUST be great at high volume
  • Skilled and experienced in seafood and Northwest cuisine
  • Ability to supervise and ensure the smooth operation of the entire kitchen
  • Ability to control labor and food cost with menu development and recipes
  • Experience in hiring and training a BOH team
  • Ability to schedule and lead by example and COOK!
  • Strong kitchen organizational skills and clean kitchen standards
  • Be a problem solver and system implementer
  • Skilled communicator that leads by example
  • Honesty, integrity and guest advocate mindset

Salary Range & Benefits

  • Salary package – $75k – $85k
  • Achievable bonus

Job Description 

We are searching for a skilled Restaurant Head Chef to join a locally-owned and growing company that was born out of a passion for thoughtfully and excellently produced food and beer, social and environmental sustainability, strong local partnerships, and generously giving back to our community. With three different and distinctive locations, each offers a unique atmosphere, menu, and identity, our focus at all of our location’s centers on world class beer and beverage offerings alongside delicious, creative, well-executed food—handmade whenever possible, using locally and regionally sourced ingredients.

Founded in 2011, taking inspiration from the neighborhood bier taverns throughout Europe, our setting has a warm atmosphere seating approximately 70 guests for dinner service Tuesday through Sunday, as well as brunch service on the weekends.  We hold high expectations for the quality of our elevated pub fare prepared with local ingredients, service, and atmosphere.

In this position, you will be responsible for menu creation from conception, to training, to final execution. Menu offerings will be creative, locally & seasonally driven, and consistently executed—all while fitting within the style and costing guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day to day running of the kitchen, with a strong eye for detail.
  • Meet monthly food cost and labor goals.
  • Be involved with personnel issues, including but not limited to employee discipline, reviews, hiring, and continued training.
  • Help to create seasonal menu offerings, including testing, recipe development and procedures, to set kitchen up for successful execution. 
  • Maintain a high level of expectations through your example of quality and efficient work.
  • Actively participate in weekly manager meetings.
  • Lead the kitchen to produce the finest meals possible in a casual setting with a strong creativity and culinary execution.
  • Maintain lists (cleaning, prep, ordering, etc.), and then update and follow through with employees regarding completion.
  • Accurately prepare month end inventory and other reports (transfers, etc.) for monthly cost analysis. 
  • Work actively with employees to minimize food waste with an eye towards sustainability.  

Requirements Ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Positive attitude and teamwork mentality
  • 5 years’ experience working in a commercial kitchen, with 2 year minimum in a food service management position
  • Have or obtain Serv Safe Certification
  • OLCC Server Permit (or be able to obtain)
  • Formal culinary education a plus!

Salary Range & Benefits

  • Salary – $43k – $50k (starting, based on experience level)
